From Clicks to Citations: New AI Search Measurement Metrics

For decades, the SEO industry has lived and died by a predictable set of numbers: rankings, sessions, and clicks. We built measurement plans that audited data sources and pipelines, ensuring Google Search Console was feeding into dashboards that executives could understand.

But the old way isn’t so helpful anymore. With the gradual rise of AI-powered search, the metrics that defined success in years ago are becoming less able to prove ROI in 2026.

“Classic search measurement is really about performance, but AI Search channels are more branding channels so you have to think about performance differently,” said iPullRank CEO Mike King. 

At its core, the goal of an AI Search Measurement plan remains the same: to align on KPIs, measure success, and correct course when performance lags. However, the structure of those conversations is shifting.

Here is how we are redefining measurement for the AI era (and how you can, too).

The Shift from Rankings to Relevance Engineering Metrics

“The measurement plan historically focused on auditing data sources and pipelines the client had,” said iPullRank Sr. Director of SEO Zach Chahalis. 

It was meant to guide the KPIs for alignment, measure success of an engagement, and measure organic performance. It also helped identify any failures to fix and correct, or ways we could improve how we report data points. 

“The AI Search version of it still looks at a lot of that but also factors in thinking about how we would score and measure Relevance Engineering metrics,” Zach said. Traditional search is lexical (matching words) while AI Search is semantic (matching meaning). Because AI engines synthesize information from multiple sources, ranking #1 is less important than being the primary citation for a complex query.

It’s a new era, so it’s time to focus on new metrics.

What Are Our New Metrics?

“Our whole measurement plan is now focused on AI visibility,” said iPullRank Lead Relevance Engineer Patrick Schofield.

We’re looking at three particular groups of metrics these days that cover the entire buyer’s journey rather than just traffic:

  • Input Metrics: Is your content aligned with what AI and search engines understand?
    • Passage relevance, entity salience, bot activity, synthetic query rankings
  • Channel Metrics: How visible is your brand online?
    • Share of voice, citation rate, citation quality, citation sentiment
  • Performance Metrics: Do your visibility and citations translate to sales?
    • Traffic, events, conversions, engagement depth

What we discuss with clients, what we present on dashboards, and the data we gather from tools have all changed. Now we’re in the phase of providing guidance to clients about their AI Search visibility and citations using tools such as Profound, Peek, and Demandsphere.

We’re also focused on personas as much as always because it’s the perfect way to help a brand customize their content for their desired audience. But like many things these days, it now has an AI twist. 

Persona-Driven Measurement

You can’t measure success if you don’t know who you’re measuring it for. One of the most significant changes in our deliverable is the emphasis on AI-generated Personas.

“We’re building personas based on your audience and we’re building out measurements that reflect those personas,” Patrick said.

By combining client ICP (Ideal Customer Profile) data and website content, we build personas to predict where traffic should be coming from. We then build measurement frameworks that reflect those specific personas. 

Different audiences often use different vocabulary, so we segment keywords by persona to get a sense of which market segments are seeing the most visibility. We need data from analytics tools to be able to effectively determine which users fall into which segments.

This involves manual segmentation on the keyword and URL level as part of our Keyword Portfolio and stored in BigQuery. We also use Nozzle, Google Analytics 4, Google Search Console, and Semrush to support our persona research.

How to Explain it to the C-Suite

There are many executives that still think in the old way regarding metrics, so the struggle is real for many marketing teams trying to explain to executives why classic rankings are dipping while overall brand influence might be growing. There are some in the C-suite that are actively trying to become educated on AI more but need some help with measuring success. 

“The C-Suite is struggling to make sense of how AI Search aligns with their business strategy moving forward,” Zach said. “They’re trying to understand: how should we be measuring AI Search? How has it changed from measuring classic search? What types of metrics and KPIs should we be looking at?”

Executives often think their teams are failing because the brand doesn’t show up for a specific, old-school prompt. For example: many people don’t just search for “mid-size SUVs” anymore. They use highly specific, long-tail, semantic prompts like, “I need a mid-size SUV that can fit a family of six comfortably with a solid warranty and build quality that is under an MSRP of $50,000.” 

But really, the key to communication with all executives is the ability to clearly explain whether or not the company is making money.

What to Share With Executives

“While it’s mostly setting the stage for reporting, in many cases there’s a decent amount of the measurement plan that talks to client-specific issues with their existing setup,” Patrick said. “The measurement plan often includes callouts to issues they have and we provide recommendations.” 

Reporting is a challenge these days for a multitude of reasons, most of which can be blamed on tools. Standard SEO tools are not meant for AI Search and haven’t caught up to the new needs of the industry. Because of this, channels aren’t being analyzed and grouped properly. Tools like GA4 typically mark leads coming in from AI platforms as referrals now so it’s hard to talk about conversion. 

We’ve developed a number of new metrics at iPullRank to help executives (and their whole teams) make sense of how their content is performing and where gaps may need to be filled. Here are a few:

Using our metrics, we set up new analytics for clients to better measure success, or we simply provide guidance for them to perform this themselves. 

Metrics and Measurement for AI Search

We’ve used rankings as a crutch to explain value for years, but in a world of synthesized answers, that crutch isn’t working as well anymore. A modern measurement plan must bridge the gap between “where do we rank?” and “how well does the model understand us?” by leaning into Relevance Engineering and persona-driven data.

Moving forward, the goal is to treat AI Search like a sophisticated brand channel. By focusing on metrics like Information Gain and Strategic Entity Richness, we can finally give the C-suite the clarity they’ve been missing lately. It’s all about winning the AI model’s trust so that your brand becomes the definitive answer for your ideal customer.

This evolution is about having more educated conversations. When we align our measurement with how people and AI models gather information, we move past the anxiety of watching classic rankings fall and toward a more ROI-focused strategy. The tools might still be behind, but with the right framework, your ability to prove value will keep up. 

“At the end of the day, these measurements are meant to help us have better and more educated conversations with our clients on the KPIs and metrics that matter to them the most,” Zach said.
