The AI Search Manual

APPENDIX

Prompt Recipes for Retrieval Simulation (GEO Testing)

OVERVIEW

This document provides a structured Retrieval Simulation Matrix for testing how different AI systems surface, cite, and summarize content about a specific product or service. The framework is designed to help testers simulate a wide range of real-world search scenarios by combining:

  • Personas: representative user types with distinct needs and priorities
  • Search Journey Stages: awareness through loyalty, reflecting the customer decision process
  • User Prompts: natural-language queries that mimic actual user behavior
  • Expected Result Types: the types of sources or content formats a high-quality retrieval should return
  • Annotation Focus: what to check for in the results, including potential red flags and quality indicators

HOW TO USE THIS MATRIX

  1. Identify the product or service you want to research.
  2. Select your personas.
  3. Define the stages of the search journey you want to cover. We used awareness to loyalty, but you can, of course, customize these.
  4. Write user prompts for each persona and stage that reflect realistic search queries.
  5. Determine the types of results you would expect to see for each prompt.
  6. Specify what testers should look for in the results, including quality indicators and potential red flags.
  7. Run the prompts across the AI platforms you want to compare.
  8. Record and analyze the outputs to assess retrieval accuracy, citation quality, diversity of sources, and potential bias.

By using consistent prompts across personas, platforms, and journey stages, testers can:

  • Measure retrieval consistency.
  • Identify bias toward certain brands or sources.
  • Evaluate accessibility and representation for niche audiences.
  • Compare performance variance between platforms.

Here is a prompt recipe template for you to experiment with:

“You are creating a Retrieval Simulation Matrix to test how AI systems retrieve, cite, and summarize content about a specific product or service.

Product/Service: [INSERT PRODUCT OR SERVICE NAME HERE]
Category: [INSERT CATEGORY HERE]
Personas: [INSERT 3–5 PERSONAS HERE, each with a short description of priorities]
Search Journey Stages: Awareness, Familiarity, Consideration, Decision, Loyalty (or custom stages if preferred)

For each stage, generate one realistic user prompt per persona that reflects how that persona might search in natural language. The prompts should align with their unique priorities and context.

For each prompt, include:

  • Expected Result Types: The formats or sources an ideal retrieval would return (e.g., product roundups, expert blogs, spec sheets).

  • Annotation Focus: What the tester should check for in the AI’s output (e.g., bias toward certain brands, accuracy of specs, presence of accessibility features, freshness of data).

Output the matrix in a table with columns: Stage | Persona | User Prompt | Expected Result Types | Annotation Focus.

Make sure prompts are diverse across personas and stages, reflecting real-world search behavior. Include at least one commercial query and one informational query per persona.”

This methodology ensures that retrieval testing captures contextual accuracy and content diversity rather than relying solely on generic benchmarks.

Next Steps: Tracking, Annotating, and Scheduling Retrieval Simulations

  1. Set up a central tracking sheet
  • Create a spreadsheet with the same columns as your Retrieval Simulation Matrix (Stage | Persona | User Prompt | Expected Result Types | Annotation Focus | Platform | Date Tested | Output Link | Notes/Annotations).
  • Add one row for each prompt-platform combination so you can compare results across AI systems.
  1. Run your simulations consistently
  • Test the same prompt set across all target AI platforms (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, SearchGPT, Copilot) in the same session to minimize freshness bias.
  • Capture exact outputs with screenshots or copy-paste into your tracking sheet (link or embed).
  1. Annotate each result for quality and bias
For every output, record observations in the Notes/Annotations column, focusing on:
  • Citation accuracy: Are the sources real, relevant, and correctly attributed?
  • Content completeness: Are key product/service features covered or missing?
  • Persona alignment: Does the tone and focus match the persona’s priorities?
  • Bias indicators: Is there an over-representation of certain brands or domains?
  • Freshness: Are data points or offers current
  • Hallucinations: Any fabricated specs, locations, or facts?
  1. Identify patterns and platform differences
  • Sort your data by platform and stage to spot strengths/weaknesses (e.g., one platform may excel in Awareness-stage diversity but fail in Decision-stage citation accuracy).
  • Flag high-priority prompts where outputs consistently miss the mark—these will guide content optimization.
  1. Establish a testing cadence
  • Baseline run: Complete the full matrix once at the start of your project to establish benchmarks.
  • Monthly check-ins: Re-run the most commercially important prompts to track changes in retrieval quality.
  • Quarterly full refresh: Re-run the entire prompt set to capture major shifts in platform behavior.
  • Ad-hoc tests: Run targeted simulations after major AI updates or product launches to measure impact.
  1. Share insights with stakeholders
  • Summarize findings in a short monthly or quarterly report showing trends, problem areas, and opportunities.
  • Include examples of good and bad outputs so teams understand the nuances, not just the scores.
